In a document filed in recent days with the government’s electronic tendering system (SEAO), ARTM says it is studying the possibility of setting up a “digital identity validation solution” to “simplify access to fare products” and avoid physical trips to the ticket counter.<\/p>\n

The software would enable Greater Montreal transit users “to verify their identity via a facial recognition system using the camera on their smartphone, or computer if applicable”, thus speeding up the process of obtaining specific tickets.<\/p>\n

This would require official documents such as a passport, license, health insurance card, or even a birth certificate or permanent resident card.<\/p>\n

The software is currently scheduled to go live in the last quarter of 2024. Initially, it will only concern online card orders for seniors, who receive fare discounts. Seniors also benefit from free travel on the island of Montreal. Until now, these people have had to obtain an OPUS card with photo, fill in a form and go to a point of service to validate their identity, which can be a long and arduous process.. <\/span>.
