On Wednesday August 28, the California legislature passed a bill to regulate the powerful models of generative artificial intelligence (AI), despite opposition from companies and elected officials who fear such regulation could stifle the nascent technology.
“I’m proud of the diversity of the coalition that supported this bill, a coalition that believes deeply in innovation and safety,” Scott Wiener, the Democratic elected official who sponsored the text, said on X.
