META AGREES TO PAY 1.9 BILLION IN PRIVACY LAWSUIT

Meta has agreed to a $1.9 billion (US$1.4 billion) settlement with Texas in a privacy lawsuit, following allegations that the tech giant used users’ biometric data without their permission.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said Tuesday that the agreement was the largest ever reached by a state.

In 2021, a judge had approved a US$650 million settlement with the company, formerly known as Facebook, over similar complaints from Illinois users.

“This historic settlement demonstrates our commitment to standing up to the world’s largest technology companies and holding them accountable for breaking the law and violating Texans’ privacy rights,” Paxton, a Republican, said in a statement.

“We are pleased that this matter has been resolved and look forward to exploring future opportunities to deepen our business investments in Texas, including the potential development of data centers,” reacted Meta... Source
