abstract = {Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks continue to grow at a rapid rate, making timely and reliable detection a challenge for intrusion detection systems (IDSs). Classical deep models such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) can capture temporal dependencies; however, they still struggle with highly nonlinear and noisy flow dynamics, especially when attack patterns shift. To address this, we propose QLSTM-E, an enhanced hybrid quantum-classical architecture for network intrusion detection that uses Variational Quantum Circuits (VQCs) and LSTM modeling to learn complex temporal dependencies in network traffic. QLSTM-E exploits quantum characteristics, including superposition and entanglement, to improve the representation of nonlinear patterns in sequential flow features. To balance expressivity and circuit cost on near-term devices, we adopt an angle-based encoding strategy and a star-topology entangling layout that reduces two-qubit gate overhead while preserving effective quantum correlations. We implement QLSTM-E using PennyLane and Qiskit and evaluate it on the CIC-DDoS2019 dataset under a fully simulated setting, requiring no access to quantum hardware. Experimental results demonstrate strong detection effectiveness, achieving 99.7% accuracy and F1-score, and show strong robustness under depolarizing noise up to p= 0.1. © 2026 IEEE.},

abstract = {The rapid spread of misinformation on social network platforms poses a serious threat to the decision-making processes in democratic societies. To mitigate the problem and cope with new misinformation scenarios several datasets have been proposed, followed by the emergence of new methods for detecting fake news. While several comparative analyses have been proposed to benchmark these solutions, the ever-growing development of new methods requires up-to-date analysis. For instance, recent approaches based on retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) have yet to be assessed and compared to previous methods used for fake news detection. In this study, we aim to fill this gap by presenting a comprehensive assessment of classical machine learning (ML) algorithms, Transformer-based models, such as BERT, large language models (LLMs), and RAG-based classifiers. We adopt four traditional fake news datasets, including a Portuguese one. Results indicate that classical ML and BERT deliver strong performance on in-domain tasks, demonstrating efficiency and high accuracy. RAG-augmented LLMs, on the other hand, offer enhanced generalization and robustness in cross-domain and cross-dataset settings, but are outperformed by traditional approaches for in-domain evaluation. © 2026 IEEE.},

abstract = {In today's rapidly evolving cyber landscape, the growing sophistication of attacks, including the rise of zero-day exploits, poses critical challenges for network intrusion detection. Traditional Intrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) often struggle with the complexity and high dimensionality of modern cyber threats. Quantum Machine Learning (QML) seamlessly integrates the computational power of quantum computing with the adaptability of machine learning, offering an innovative approach to solving intricate and high-dimensional challenges. A key factor in QML's performance is the method used to encode classical data into quantum states, as it defines how data is represented and processed in quantum circuits. QML offers promising advances for IDS, particularly through hybrid quantum-classical models. This study presents an in-depth comparative analysis of quantum-classical data encoding techniques for QML-based IDS. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to comprehensively evaluate the performance impact of different quantum encoding methods and provide a thorough evaluation of their impacts on the overall model performances. To achieve this, we first present a comprehensive evaluation of quantum and classical data encoding techniques, focusing on four key encoding techniques namely, Amplitude Embedding, Angle Embedding, Instantaneous Quantum Polynomial (IQP) Encoding, and Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) Embedding. Then, we develop a hybrid quantum-classical QML model to analyze how each encoding affects classification performance for malicious traffic. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments using two well-known, real-world network attack datasets to assess the accuracy and efficiency of each encoding approach. Our obtained results show notable differences in classification accuracy, underscoring the importance of encoding choice in optimizing QML-based IDS. This study aims to advance the application of quantum methodologies in network security by identifying effective encoding strategies for intrusion detection. © 2025 IEEE.},

abstract = {Adversarial examples can represent a serious threat to machine learning (ML) algorithms. If used to manipulate the behaviour of ML-based Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS), they can jeopardize network security. In this work, we aim to mitigate such risks by increasing the robustness of NIDS towards adversarial attacks. To that end, we explore two adversarial methods for generating malicious network traffic. The first method is based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) and the second one is the Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM). The adversarial examples generated by these methods are then used to evaluate a novel multilayer defense mechanism, specifically designed to mitigate the vulnerability of ML-based NIDS. Our solution consists of one layer of stacking classifiers and a second layer based on an autoencoder. If the incoming network data are classified as benign by the first layer, the second layer is activated to ensure that the decision made by the stacking classifier is correct. We also incorporated adversarial training to further improve the robustness of our solution. Experiments on two datasets, namely UNSW-NB15 and NSL-KDD, demonstrate that the proposed approach increases resilience to adversarial attacks. © 2025 IEEE.},

abstract = {The cognitive state of a person can be categorized using the circumplex model of emotional states, a continuous model of two dimensions: arousal and valence. The purpose of this research is to select a machine learning model(s) to be integrated into a virtual reality (VR) system that runs cognitive remediation exercises for people with mental health disorders. As such, the prediction of emotional states is essential to customize treatments for those individuals. We exploit the Remote Collaborative and Affective Interactions (RECOLA) database to predict arousal and valence values using machine learning techniques. RECOLA includes audio, video, and physiological recordings of interactions between human participants. To allow learners to focus on the most relevant data, features are extracted from raw data. Such features can be predesigned, learned, or extracted implicitly using deep learners. Our previous work on video recordings focused on predesigned and learned visual features. In this paper, we extend our work onto deep visual features. Our deep visual features are extracted using the MobileNet-v2 convolutional neural network (CNN) that we previously trained on RECOLA’s video frames of full/half faces. As the final purpose of our work is to integrate our solution into a practical VR application using head-mounted displays, we experimented with half faces as a proof of concept. The extracted deep features were then used to predict arousal and valence values via optimizable ensemble regression. We also fused the extracted visual features with the predesigned visual features and predicted arousal and valence values using the combined feature set. In an attempt to enhance our prediction performance, we further fused the predictions of the optimizable ensemble model with the predictions of the MobileNet-v2 model. After decision fusion, we achieved a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.1140, a Pearson’s correlation coefficient (PCC) of 0.8000, and a concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) of 0.7868 on arousal predictions. We achieved an RMSE of 0.0790, a PCC of 0.7904, and a CCC of 0.7645 on valence predictions. © 2024 by the authors.},
