abstract = {As Virtual reality (VR) is increasingly used in neurological disorders such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or attention deficit disorder, the question of how it impacts the brain's neuronal activity and function becomes essential. VR can be combined with neuroimaging to offer invaluable insight into how the targeted brain areas respond to stimulation during neurorehabilitation training. That, in turn, could eventually serve as a predictive marker for therapeutic success. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) identified neuronal activity related to blood flow to reveal with a high spatial resolution how activation patterns change, and restructuring occurs after VR training. Portable and quiet, electroencephalography (EEG) conveniently allows the clinician to track spontaneous electrical brain activity in high temporal resolution. Then, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) combines the spatial precision level of fMRIs with the portability and high temporal resolution of EEG to constitute an ideal measuring tool in virtual environments (VEs). This narrative review explores the role of VR and concurrent neuroimaging in cognitive rehabilitation. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd},

abstract = {Purpose: To investigate the coping strategies of youth sexual offenders, which are believed to be important elements in the development of sexual offending behaviours. Subjects and method: This cross-sectional study investigated two groups of male adolescents (n = 196) consisting of youth sexual offenders and non-offender peers. Examination of the coping strategies was measured by a Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS). Results: It was hypothesized that youth sexual offenders used sex-related activities and emotions as coping strategies to alleviate negative emotional states and problematic situations. The results obtained demonstrated that youth sexual offenders make less use of sex-related activities as a way of coping with stressful situations, but make more use of emotions-coping strategies when compared to non-offender peers. An attempt was made to predict youth as sexual offenders or non-offenders according to the coping strategies they used in times of stress. The logistic regression model used was statistically significant and the analysis performed increased the likelihood of correctly identifying youth sexual offenders based on the coping strategies used in times of stress. Conclusion: The results of the study demonstrated that youth sexual offenders have a tendency to use emotional responses to cope with life's difficulties, which may be increasing their level of stress and thereby placing them at a higher risk to offend sexually. © 2009 Elsevier Masson SAS. abstract = {Many studies have assessed virtual reality exposures efficacy, but very few examined its treatment processes. The addition of objective measures of arousal and information processing mechanisms would be a valuable contribution in order to provide a more complete and detailed picture. The goal of this study was to better document the cognitive mechanisms associated with therapeutic change after an in virtuo exposure treatment. Twenty-eight adults suffering from arachnophobia were assessed and received an exposure-based treatment using virtual reality. General outcome and specific processes measures included a battery of standardized questionnaires, a pictorial emotional Stroop task, a Behavioral Avoidance Test, and a measure of participants' cardiac response while they looked at a live tarantula. The analyses showed that changes in perceived self-efficacy and dysfunctional beliefs were the best predictors of change in general outcome and cardiac response; change in dysfunctional beliefs were the best predictor of change in behavioral avoidance. These innovative results provide a very detailed and organized picture of the complex cognitive mechanisms involved in therapeutic change following in virtuo exposure for arachnophobia. © 2009 Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.},

abstract = {Background. The aim of this study was to verify the presence and stability across life of the positive/negative distinction in early-onset schizophrenia (EO-SZ) through a longitudinal factor analysis of the schizophrenic dimensions, and to identify the factors predicting several indices of long-term outcome for EO-SZ. Method. Forty children consecutively referred for DSM-III-R schizophrenia (SZ) in a specific catchment area comprised the sample. Results. Across a 14.8-year follow-up, longitudinal factor analysis identified two separate factors corresponding to the positive and negative symptom dimensions. We also observed that: the GAS rated over the last three years of adult illness and the severity of negative symptoms during the stabilised interepisode intervals in adulthood were the indices of adult outcome that were most easily predicted; and the best childhood predictors of adult outcome were premorbid functioning and severity of positive and negative symptoms during acute episodes. Conclusions. The presence of premorbid non-psychotic behaviour disturbances (NPBD) and premorbid developmental problems was not related to severity of outcome, in contrast to the former variables.},
